What sound can and cannot do

The honest line between established audio principles and unproven claims.

Well established

Sound masking is real and well understood: steady, low-information sound reduces how noticeable sudden noises are, which is why rain, fans and brown noise help people concentrate or fall asleep in noisy places.

Attention anchoring is also uncontroversial. Giving attention a simple, continuous target is a core mechanic of most meditation traditions, and a held tone is a very effective target.

Relaxation responses to calm, predictable audio are widely reported and easy to notice in yourself. Slow, quiet, unchanging sound tends to make people breathe more slowly.

Limited or emerging

Binaural-style listening — a slightly different tone in each ear — has produced mixed research results for relaxation and focus. Some studies find small effects, others find none. It is genuinely interesting and genuinely unsettled.

Claims that a specific hertz number produces a specific physiological or emotional result do not currently have solid evidence behind them.

Not established

Sound does not repair cells, alter DNA, cure illness or replace medical or mental-health care. Any source telling you otherwise is selling something.

GSS labels every frequency with an evidence level for exactly this reason. If a page says traditional practice or anecdotal, treat it as culture, not medicine.

Takeaway

Sound is an excellent tool for attention, masking and relaxation. It is not a treatment, and GSS will never present it as one.
